TypeSpace Status

Thursday, December 2, 2004 at 7:44 pm | Comments off

It's been a while since I've said much about TypeSpace, mostly because I don't want to miss my mark with an ETA like I did earlier. However, I'm well aware that my lack of updating on the progress isn't the answer.

Those interested in the status have probably been checking the todo list. As you may have noticed, the list is getting shorter and shorter, and finally, has wound down to just a few items left. There is much, much more than I wanted to have done before the beta went live, but I've decided to postpone some of those features until the full release. My main issue with it is it's current design (or lack of it). However, rather than further set back the beta release, that is also an issue that will get dealt with later - hopefully shortly after the first beta release.

To all those who have been signed up and waiting for the past couple of months, thanks for your patience. I'm estimating I've probably got 10-15 hours left of work until I can release the beta. It's just trying to squeeze those hours in somewhere during my days.

I gotta tell you, I'm very interested in trying out the TypeSpace Beta. I've switched over to TXP, but I still want to see how well TypeSpace works. I loved how easy xBlog Lite was to use, so hopefully this new software will be just as pleasant to use. Hopefully you can squeeze in enough time to get that redesign out around the same time you release TypeSpace. How cool would that be?

Is that redesign for your site or TypeSpace default layout? And out of curiousity, have you tried to implement features from other Blog Systems that you liked and leave out stuff you didn't or is it a totally different monster you're creating?

The redesign is for my site. As I said, eventually everything to do with TypeSpace will be redesigned, but I don't have time right now.

As far as what features it has, believe it or not, when I began building it I wasn't aware of software such as WordPress or Movable Type. So, a lot of the features are just things that I wanted to be able to. Obviously most of these features are also incorporated into the other packages, and I've since installed MT and WP, to look for ideas. Overall, it'll be similar to other blogging software, at least for now. We do have comment editing, though. ;)

"To all those who have been signed up and waiting for the past couple of months, thanks for your patients."

If I had any patients,, you could have them. Seeing as how I'm not a doctor, though, all you get is my patience.

;)

I'm excited about the release, Ryan. As a very new TXP user (I just launched 2 days ago), I have no loyalties there yet. Make me a believer.

Also, I'm really sorry about not getting back to you regarding helping out on the project. Although it may be way too later in the game to assist at all, I'd love to help you if you want. Let me know if you want some help (either for the beta release or for something else in the future).

Oops. Guess that's what I get for posting while I was supposed to be working... ;)

I'll do my best. :)

Edit: Oh wow, just noticed you added the edit feature. Nice. BTW, I also appreciate being able to preview and subscribe. And that it complies with web standards. Mucho thanks.

Hey Ryan, I've been lurking on your blog for about a week or so and just downloaded xBlogLite (which I like a lot, it's almost everything I've wanted in a blogging system).

Is Typespace going to be php based as well or is it a whole other animal from xBlogLite?

Anyway, keep up the great work!

Yes I do, Ryan. They're always enabled. Maybe my system was overwhelmed the other day and disabled them on its own (I did have to do a restart). I'll try to edit this post and see.

It wouldn't work now either. My cookie manager shows several cookies from your site. And your comment form auto-fills my info so it's remembering me. I don't know what the cause is. I'm on mozilla-1.5, win-xp. I take it others are able to edit.

When I click the Edit link I get the edit window for making the changes. Then after I make changes, they display on Preview but not when I hit Save.

Ok, thanks. I'll look into it when I get a chance. I know that at least some people are able to edit their comments, which is strange...

Yeah Ryan, I have had problems with the editing of comments as well. I will see if its working now or not...

Yep, commenting is working now...

I noticed TypeSpace produces 'friendly URIs'. For example, this page is: /archives/typespace-status

I've also seen it dated like this: /development/2004/12/fight-spam/

How do you do that instead of displaying a query string? Guess that's too much of a technical question to answer in this thread, but I would like to learn how it's done.

(Not wanting querystrings in my website URIs is the main reason I haven't converted to database-driven site design.) Now that I asked the question I'm having ideas of how it could be done, but the trick is to make it simple and easy.

Dean, take a look at this article: Cruft-Free URLs

That will explain the basics of rewriting urls. Feel free to leave a comment on that article with any questions and I'll try to answer them. (I realize the article doesn't tell how to convert from archives/script.php?id=15 to archives/article-name/, so if you'd like to know how to do that, just drop a comment over there, rather than start that conversation here.)

You damn brills. Always become "famous" in web design. I'm going to change my name from Zach Blume to Zach Brill. No, that doesn't work. Maybe Zach Shea...
OR Zach Meyer
Or not...

I'm right here with the other guys, waiting patiently. Just don't know how much longer I can handle this waiting. =) I would love to put my Plog over to TypeSpace eventually...I have installed Movable Type 3.2 the other night, currently working on a layout for it.

Please hurry, please.. please. =) I know good things take time, but, not this dang long...lol. Just kidding..

Mums the word for right now, but TypeSpace development is moving forward and updates will be posted once there is something to say.
