Scobleizer Redesign

As mentioned in my blogmarks, Robert Scoble is having a little redesign contest of sorts. As if I didn't already have enough to do, I figured I'd add that to my plate and have a go at it. You know, for the greater good of design or something like that...

So, here's what I've come up with so far (currently in PNG format). I've only briefly looked at his source code, so I'm not sure how exactly I'll be able to port that over to CSS, given the constraint of not being able to change any XHTML, but I can't believe it'll be a big issue. I'd like to have a bit more control over it, by changing some of his existing graphics, so should he decide to go with my design, I'll likely talk with him about doing so, just to touch up one or two final things.

Go ahead and let me know what you think. The final design doesn't need to be in until September 1st, though I doubt I'll have much time to work on it next week, so I'm going to try to finish it up within the next few days. The reason I'm posting what I've come up with so far is so that I'll have time to update the design should you guys point out things that need to change.

That's a pretty nice design Ryan. I hope he lets you tweak it up a little bit also if you win :D.

I like the wicked worn look of the design proposal. I really like the font you used for the title. A few suggestions if I may...

I think there needs to be a bit more color. Maybe just more color outside what will be the container div.

I like how nice and clean you've kept everything, but you only show a part of the links on the side since it's just a mock up. But Robert has a TON of links on the side! Without headers like you've got to break up the links, it won't look much different than what he's got now.

Also, one thing that I've seen mentioned a few times in comments is to keep a photo in there. Is there some way to incorporate a photo of him in there without ruining the whole wicked worn look?

Ray,

Yeah, it was my first try at the wicked worn look. I've been wanting to try it out for a while, but only just had the time and an oppertunity to do so. Hopefully Robert likes the worn out look. ;)

As far as the sidebar, I've really not worked with that much. Most of what you see is a direct screenshot off his current site. Since I probably won't be doing much with it graphically, I'm not even going to play with it until I start writing the CSS.

Finally, did Robert say he wanted to keep a picture of himself on the design? I looked through some of the comments, but didn't see anything that would make me think that that is something he wanted. A link would be cool.

It looks really nice.

I fear he will complain about the calendar. The font size is quite small.

I want to learn to make comps like that! Did you do it in Fireworks?

Speaking of bookmarks, do you have an RSS feed for your bookmarks?

I'm sorry about the confusion. No, Robert didn't specifically say he wanted to keep the picture, but others in comments did. Here's the link

Here's what people in the comments had to say:

"Robert, it's nice. A bit corporate-ish looking, though. Don't let the design lose your personality!"

"The design works well, but I kind of miss the photo at the top."

"doesn't convince me. too cold, too template-ish."

The suggestion to keep a picture of some sort was based on comments like that. Not really a must from Robert himself.

Zelnox - I actually used a combination of Fireworks, Photoshop, and Paint Shop Pro. One of these days I'd like to write up how I go about my creative process.

Richard - No, not yet, but I'll get around to adding one when I get some time. I'd really like to fix up my entire blogmarks script and then perhaps offer it as a download. So much to do, so little time spent doing it. ;)

Also, I've got an updated version of the design in place. A few changes need to be made yet, but it's getting closer.

What happened to the comment I posted yesterday?

Well, just in case it was some error or accident, I said:

I like the design. It kind of reminds me of the old modulo26.net and my current site (by the header).
